The Townships of Redding, Greenwood, Freeman, and Lincoln are included in the Lake George Area History and Genealogy project.  Shingle Lake is right next to Lake George, the lake.

The Polar Express visited Lake George a few years ago.  There was a day that the steam engines hauled ice from Lake George to Toledo.

Welcome to the Lake George Area History and Genealogy WEBSITE. This is a project in progress.  You will note the topics currently under research at the left.  Your input is needed and welcomed as we build together.

Lake George  has had a Community Church for a very long time.  My first recollection , about 1941, was at a time when the services were held in the Community Building.  Can still visualize Mr. Norman Tolson doing his chalk talk in Sunday School

The Borst Family, who had donated the Land for the School on the Hill (the earlier school was on the south side of Shingle Lake), later donated that building to the Community Church. That building built in 1913 as District No. 2 was retired a few years back and a new Church was built on the same grounds.   The Borst Family was among the first settlers.  They were involved in the later part of the lumbering era and into the beginning of the resort era. including one of the first stores.  Oh yes, some of the family are still here.

The Identification of the School on the Hill. Believe this ID was located near the top in front of building.  It is believe that it was boarded over and then rediscoverd when the school/church was torn down.  There were other schools in Lincoln township.

This was the Building that served both as a school and a church. The school history is one phase and the community church the other.  The reference is often made as the school up the hill.  The kids walked to and from school, carried lunch buckets, had recess, and out door toilets.  Later, in the 40's indoor plumbing arrived.  Will have pictures later of those who were part of the last class of the school up the hill.

Lincoln Township Offices in Lake George.    This building was built in the early 1930's as part of the THEN work projects: A previous stimulus package! Will have more on the history of this building and the park.

Many families who settled here in the Lake George Area or were regular resorters in the earlier years were well acquainted with Farwell.  The Ann Arbor Railroad to Lake George was through Farwell.  The Doctor was in Farwell. The High School was in Farwell for those students who attended the  Freeman and Lincoln Townships country schools.  The Farwell Museum pictured on the left contains much History of this Area.

A view of Lake George in about 1915. This building was located on the south  side of the tracks and some 150 feet east.   This was the depot at that time.  Notice the 'train'.  The Kress Family lived there at the time.  They were among the early settlers in this area.  More on that family later. The Howard Family lived in this Railroad House in later years after the then new Depot was built.

A map of Lake George with publication date 1906.  The drawings were started earlier.  Looking directly north of Shingle Lake is a section owned by Ann Arbor Railroad. This is the location of the earliest train station and was also the site of the General Store operated by a Mr. Borst.  Will have much detailed information on the Borst Family (just click on Topic at left).  You will also note that the North and South Road was slightly different then. Will detail more information on this map later.
